The region is hilly, but traversed with rich valleys. The region is also the home of the Ria Formosa lagoon, a nature reserve of over 170 square kilometres and a stopping place for hundreds of different birds, migrating two times a year in the spring and autumn. The interior of the Algarve is still relatively unknown. The flower-decked, white washed villages have managed to preserve their traditional appearance, where handicrafts are still an important industry for local inhabitants. The year round scents are worth the visit, with eucalyptus, pine, lavender and rock-rose all growing here in abundance. |
